To member of the NOPD-
I just wanted to thank you so much for all of the work you put in during the Hurricane Kartina disaster. I remember hearing stories about police in the area performing questionable actions. But I clung to the hope and knew in my heart that there were people like you that were completing duties and helping all of the stranded and injured people. I can only imagine what it was like in the disaster area, so thank you again for risking all that you did to help fellow residents.   - Jenni, Davenport, IA

Dear New Orleans Doctor,   I haven't had the chance to meet you, or speak with you for that matter, but I already like you. I like you because you dedicate your life to help other people. Thank you for saving the many people in Hurricane Katrina that you did, and I wanted to let you know, that in my eyes and in many other peoples' you are a true hero. Not many people can say they are a true hero.    This may sound silly now, but I want you to save this email, print it, or save it in a folder or whatever you wish, but in times when you are hurt, or sad, or angry, and possibly down on yourself, look at this letter to help you remember that you are a true hero, mine and others' for this we thank you!    Dylan Knoxville, Illinois

To all First Responders and Rescue Personnel who helped in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina:

I wish to express my deepest thanks for your bravery and steadfastness in the face of such a terrible natural disaster. I know that in two years things have not come as far as many had hoped and that there is a long road ahead on our way to rebuilding and restoring New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast, but without you the people who you saved and protect would not have that opportunity.

Thank you for giving those people a chance to survive and for being so selfless in your own time of need. I hope that the future for you and your families becomes ever more prosperous as your generosity is hopefully returned to you.

Best wishes for a healthy tomorrow,

Peter

Dear Louisiana Nurse,

I want to take this time to write you a quick thank you message, for all your efforts, strength, and courage to stay in New Orleans and continue to help people during Hurricane Katrina. I am a nursing student in my senior year, and as I look to enter the professional work force, I know that I will always have your wonderful and heartfelt example to look at, and  I can only hope that in my nursing practice, if that call to action ever came, I would be among the first to arrive, and the last to leave. Thank you for your inspiration and for all your efforts to save all those you came across, based on both your nurse's caring intuition, or your own.

Dear Public Servants of New Orleans:

Your unending courage and dedication to helping others is a constant inspiration.  It is because of you that I have faith in everyone's ability to rise against societal obstacles, and to make genuine impacts in their communities - namely, by devoting one's life to others in a world that frequently fails to recognize their self-worths.  Thank you for reminding me of the reasons why I also hope to enter public service after graduating.

Admiringly,

I wanted to thank you for the example you set for us.  To be candid, I don't have your courage or your strength, and I am not ashamed in the least to say I am grateful there are people like you to pick up the slack.  You are truly heroic. I am grateful, and I admire you.

To the Heroes in Louisiana,

I, like many others, watched the pain and anguish of those caught in the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. The images on the television screen proved to most that any day could be the last, that life could be taken away in an instant. But in all this, there is always hope; hope for survival, hope for the true goodness of mankind. Because in those days of harsh wind, rain, and flood, the only light shining to those saved was from the kindness and total selflessness of people like you. Through the darkest hours in each life, there can be seen the finest displays of love. That is what you showed, a love unlike any other. Thank you for all your efforts during Hurricane Katrina. You are the true leaders of this country, leading by the examples of bravery, honor, and compassion. My best wishes and appreciation are with you and your families always.

God Bless,

Dear First Responders in Louisiana (and throughout the Gulf Coast):

In our day to day lives, there are so many times when we say we will get something done - and then it gets lost in the shuffle.  Days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months, and it still does not get done.  You were different.  You made (and make) your commitments out to be true priorities, and you put everything else - your health, wealth, and much more - all on hold so that you could be there, responding first, and trying to save lives.   May God Bless you.

To a member of the NOPD,

I do not know you personally, but I know that you are amazing. Anyone who can think clearly enough to react as you must have done is obviously very special. Katrina was horrible, but not nearly as bad as it would have been without the heroes of the New Orleans Police Department.

Dear Heroes in Louisiana,

I would like to recognize and praise all your efforts of service after Hurricane Katrina. It seems as if the awareness to revive Louisiana has dwindled dramatically.  I, too, admit that I have become less aware of these global situations.  However, recently, I attended a dinner...and at this dinner, a group of students who went to Louisiana made me aware of the present situation.  It struck me that people are still enduring these hardships in New Orleans, and I truly give my gratitude to all who helped and are still helping to revive Louisiana.  Knowing that people are there helping those in times of crisis brightens my day.  Because of you, I believe that your courage, perseverance, and dedication not only has touched my heart but the hearts of thousands of people around the country and worldwide. I thank you for everything you have done.

Your love and dedication will not be forgotten.

To a Member of the NOPD,

Katrina hit New Orleans so hard that for anyone not there, it's hard to even fathom the level of destruction and the pungent hopelessness all must have felt.  I want to thank you for being someone to help all cling to hope.  It
would have been so easy to turn and flee with all the others, but you fulfilled your responsibility and went above and beyond what anyone could have asked for when you courageously went out to serve the citizens.  May
God bless you and your family.

Thank you,

Dear Katrina First Responders-

Words cannot express the gratitude felt by those you helped and by those who witnessed your kind acts.  Many individuals show up to their job or career everyday without a second thought about the great deeds they are undertaking.  Firefighters, EMT's, Nurses, Doctors...they do their job and help others in the process.   Aristotle once said, "moral excellence comes about as a result of habit. We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts."  After Katrina, it was habit that brought you to work despite the horrific conditions and uncertainty that was before you.  You pushed aside your fear and angst and saved countless lives.  Your bravery and unwillingness to give up will forever be remembered by all.   From the bottom of my heart, I say THANK YOU!

Dear New Orleans Police Officers:

I wanted to send a sincere thank you from a fellow American, here in Tempe, Arizona, who recognizes the courage and heroism that you all exhibited, and continue to exhibit, in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina. The mission of law enforcement officials is to "protect and serve," and your officers have done so under circumstances that shook our nation at its core. The work that you do on a daily basis allows us to pursue the freedoms and the rights that we enjoy under our beloved Constitution. You are the protectors and the keepers of our domestic security, and we all owe you a debt of gratitude.

May God bless all of you and keep you safe as you venture into harm's
way on our behalf every day that you wear that uniform and proudly bear that badge of courage on your chests. Your impact is felt by all of us who rely on your service and bravery and who salute you for the commitment that you honor daily of protecting and serving all of us.

Brothers and Sisters in New Orleans:

...I know how difficult it must be to return to any vestige of normality, both at work and at home. Watching this event unfold, and the extremely difficult effort that followed, I cannot help but feel a sense of admiration and respect for the valuable work you all did within your community in the face of some of the worst conditions I have ever seen.  I am one of the Public Educators for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue here in Ontario, Canada. One of the important tasks that I do is visit schools to talk to kids about careers and community. If all of us, kids and adults, could all follow the example you have shown in the face of your challenges and for your community, I'm sure we could all benefit in some small, but wonderful way. Keep up the good work, and be safe!

Dear First Responder,

Words cannot express the vital work you have done and continue to do for those who have experienced the trauma of Katrina.  You have given time, energy and dedication to a thankless job.  Though many have forgotten, and moved on with their lives, you continue to work with the devastation of this hurricane, and for that we thank you.  Please know that your efforts are and continue to be appreciated by those you have helped and by the rest of the country.

Best Wishes,

To The Dedicated Firefighters of New Orleans, LA:

The recent passing of the one year anniversary of one of our nation's most devastating natural disasters, Hurricane Katrina, brought with it a number of feelings including pain and suffering both for a historic city still feeling the effects of Katrina, and for countless families who have lost loved ones during the storm. However, this anniversary, and perhaps this letter too, have given me a moment to think about your contributions and what it means to me that you put your life on the line out of sheer sense of duty. In particular, your efforts have made it possible for me to attend Tulane University, a school which to this day stands as strong as it did before the storm perhaps as a testament to all of the hard work the people of New Orleans, specifically the firefighters. Although the road to recovery has only just begun, it's comforting to know that people of your character are working on the front lines. Thank you for all you've done.

Dear Good Citizen of Louisiana,

Please know that your efforts have not gone unnoticed!  I have not been to New Orleans in a very long time, but I watched in disbelief as your city was swept away by water.  The news images on my television set did not seem real.  Yet, in the middle of all the water and people digging out precious belongings -- were images of a quieter people.  They were pictures and photographs and stories of people like you doing good.  Police officers stayed to help, nurses took extra time with patients who wouldn't have survived without them, and firefighters took extra risks when they could have been helping themselves.  Please accept this note of appreciation for everything you have done for the people of New Orleans.  You have inspired me... as well as so many other people all across the country.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Best wishes,

For the New Orleans Firefighters,

I am writing to give you a simply 'thank you'and to express my gratitude for the service you have done the people of New Orleans. Hurricane Katrina was one of the most horrible disasters we have ever seen and it is reassuring to know that there are people like you that did not hide and wait out the storm. You helped in whatever way you could and for that I am very thankful. Your hard work and dedication saved lives and I can only hope you realize the impact you have had on not only the lives you have saved, but the impact you have had on the rest of the country. You are an example to be followed. Thank you again.

Dear Louisiana firefighter, It takes a lot to risk your life everyday. It takes a lot of heart and courage to save people not even knowing if you will be safe yourself. Not often do we get to show our appreciation to those that work hard to protect us, so I would like to today. I have close friends that lost a lot in the midst of Katrina, therefore I would like to say thank you on behalf of them as well. They never would have been able to make it without you!

Brittney, Kennesaw - Georgia

You are a hero, as all hard-working, dedicated firefighters are.  I hope you know that and never lose sight of that.  I want to thank you, and you know what, I'm going to thank my own town's firefighters now, too.  You made me think of them, and you made me appreciate them even more!

Sincerely,

Toni, New York

Dear Katrina Heroes,

We are so grateful to all of you in the front line in our devastated communities of our elegant southern states.  You have chosen careers that place you in uncontrolled environments that test your strength and character everyday.  You not only have to cope with the natural elements but also the unpredictable human element.  I just want to say thank you
for your commitment to making sense out of the chaos and valuing lives of the people who were trapped by the hurricane and its aftermath.

Everyday I feel honored to work with people just like you!  Everyday someone in a uniform will place themselves at risk when they respond to a domestic violence dispute. These are some of the most dangerous and unpredictable calls for law enforcement. At the Marjaree Mason Center, in Fresno California we are able to serve more than 5,400 women and
children a year because first responders kept them safe from harm.  Our clients have horrific stories to tell - ones that no one deserves to live.  Yet they are grateful that there was someone to save them from their storm even if they do not tell you at the time.

All of us have come to depend on our first responders to be there when we most need them (car accidents, domestic violence incidents, unlawfulness, or bad weather).  It should be no surprise that you were there for the Katrina victims in the worst storm of the century.

Thank you for choosing a career of community service, for making a difference in people's lives.  And thank you to your wonderful families for sharing you when they needed you most.

Pamela Kallsen
Executive Director
Marjaree Mason Center

Dear Louisiana First Responder,

I'm writing to thank you for the courage and discipline you demonstrated during the storm and the subsequent chaos of the evacuation.  But more importantly, I want to offer you encouragement since there is still much work to be done, and you will need that same courage and discipline to get through the next weeks and months.  You have the support of the entire country. All Americans, regardless of age, race, religion, and politics, are behind you and all of the people helping rebuild the region.  Hopefully this letter will be a reminder of that support.  We'll all still be with you, long after the TV cameras leave.  So, when times are tough during the clean-up and reconstruction, just think back to this letter and the thousands of letters like this one.  You have one nation behind you.

Sincerely,

Being a police officer almost automatically qualifies you for 'hero' status.  However, facing the most incredible array of natural and human-caused disaster and standing tall for the sake of others is one good way to define a true hero.  Standing your ground and staying on the job in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina makes you a hero in my book!

I am an instructor at California State University, Fresno. I teach courses on leadership and community service.  My students were asked to consider writing letters to members of the New Orleans Police Department who stayed on the job in the face of what must have been unimaginable horrors.  The reason I asked them to consider writing these letters is because one thing leaders and public servants rarely get is thanks.  In your job, I am sure you don't always get a lot of thanks.  You probably get a lot more grief than you do respect.  Even if it is from 2,000 miles away, I hope you can feel my respect for you and the work you have done and are doing in New Orleans.  I'm happy to join my students and say 'Thank you' for staying on the job and serving the people of New Orleans.  My thoughts and prayers have been and will continue to be with you, your colleagues and all the residents of New Orleans.

Sincerely,

I cannot stop myself from writing a few words to you when I heard the news of your bravery in fighting against Hurricane Katrina.  As a student living near the West Coast, I really feel humble and proud of you...I appreciate your perseverance and sacrifice...you have equaled the standard set by New York police and firefighters who gave their lives to help the victims of the cruel 9/11 attack...Today, the whole nation is on its feet to salute you...

Dear Officer,

This is just a personal thank you letter from someone who was nowhere near your disaster but recognizes the hard work you have done.  I am college student at Fresno State in Fresno, California.  I have been glued to my TV since Hurricane Katrina first struck and I can't even imagine what you have been through.  But I do know that because of your resilience, commitment and love, you have helped so many people and saved so many lives.  I just want you to know that you are considered a hero and I am praying for you.

Thank you, Fire Fighters who stepped in to help, I am a school superintendent, a member of Kiwanis and a member of a local church and in all of those capacities I saw people here in California jumping in to respond to a situation across the country.  Our students and families, which included some local fire fighters, volunteered their time, their services, and their money to help purchase and organize supplies or to simply send money to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

However, we did all of that from the safety and comfort of our schools, our homes, and our churches.  You did it under dangerous conditions in which your lives were in danger.  You had to be pulled away from your own families to help people you had never met.  You are true heroes and I want you to know how much we value what you did.

This is from someone who is devoted to recognizing Wildland Firefighters and the work they do. I have heard from many resources that folks at the hurricane sites where asking for the people in the green pants, because they were so dependable, helpful, and kind. I am so very proud of you, not only saving our Private and Public Lands, from Forest Fires, but for the Space Shuttle Recovery and all the other disaster you are called to work on. I know you do not do your job for the money or the accolades, but I did want to take the opportunity to THANK YOU, for all that you are, and all the
sacrifices that you make.

Dear NOPD,

I have watched from a distance all the coverage of hurricane Katrina and the hard work you are all doing to help individuals, connect families and lift the spirit of a damaged city.  Not knowing how I could help, I wanted to start by saying thank you!

To the brave officers of the NOPD,

I am in New Jersey but just watching what's been happening in New Orleans and  the rest of the area makes me cry. I'd like to say that the police officers that risked their lives to try to save others are outstanding individuals.  You deserve thanks and praise.  It truly takes a special person to do what you do.

To a wonderful officer of the NOPD,

I just wanted to say Thank God for people like you. You are an amazingly strong, and dedicated person; not only because you are a part of the NOPD, but because you acted as you did to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.  I know that there are many people who would like to thank you, but don't have the means of doing so at the moment.  I was not affected by the hurricane, being that I live in New Jersey, but if I were down in Louisiana, then I would be so thankful to you and the rest of your department.  Keep up the good work! God Bless!

Sincerely,

Hello, I am writing to say thank you to all of the officers that stayed to help and for all of their tireless effort , caring, concern and providing safety and just being wonderful human beings in assisting in rescuing so many of your fellow citizens.  I admire your bravery in a time that so many said "I am outta here!"  I live in a suburb of Chicago and from my tv I know I saw just a small amount of the death and destruction both Kartina and Rita brought to your city.  Without you, your police chief and Mayor Nagin, I truly believe the death toll would have been so much higher, the looting greater and New Orleans would have been the lost city. The officers that stayed and put their lives in harms way for so many hours upon hours, I say thank you.  When you look in the mirror in the morning, I hope you see the pride and gratitude in you that so many of us see and feel!

Just a note to let all of the New Orleans Police Department, that have worked so unselfishly during Katrina and now Rita, know that I am in awe of them.  A simple thank you does not seem adequate, but its the best I can do in a e-mail.  I think of you all daily.

Thank You and much Admiration,

Dear Officer,

Mother Teresa said "To have courage for whatever comes in life~ everything lies in that". Thank you for risking your life so that others might live. Courage is not the absence of fear, fear is the opportunity for courage something that you and many of your fellow officers display in your heroic acts. So many times all I ever hear are the horrible things that happen in life and how it seems that mankind has lost its value on human beings, what you have done and are still doing warms my heart and you have shown the world just how valuable humankind is because you chose to stay behind and love through the greatest sacrifice there is to give. In the book Flags of Our Father's there are many quotes from W.W.II soldiers, one of may favorites is from a young soldier "it isn't about fighting the war, winning or losing, it is about laying down your life for a friend".  Thank you for loving fellow man.

Dearest Gulf Coast Civil Servant,

I know the salutation seems impersonal but believe me the message is not. If I knew you personally I could more directly give you the message you deserve, but, not being able to, I will tell you what I think you should know.  To see each and every one of you working to help those around you despite the fact that your own families and homes were in pieces was more than I thought my heart could bear.  For the real nature of one who gives of him or her self was evident during these last few weeks.  Valor, character, weakness and passion are what I saw on your faces and in your actions.  You are true heroes.

Please know that your selfless contribution is greatly appreciated not only by those you assisted, but also by those of us in the family we call America.  Our hearts were broken to know that we could not be there with you, to help in the task or simply to provide a shoulder to cry on.  You must know we are with you now. It’s a shame that we don’t show our gratitude day in and day out, I think we just begin to take things for granted most of the time and its in times like these that those exceptional souls float to the top for all of us to see.

I want to thank you for being there and I wish you the best. My heart is with you. Know that Chicago is a place where you can come and have a friend.

My best regards,

Christy - Chicago, Illinois

Dear Officer,

I just wanted to take time out and say thank you for your commendable service to the citizens of New Orleans, LA. Many of your colleagues that took the same oath to serve and protect as you have for whatever reason been unable to so in the city’s hour of greatest need. The fact that you have stayed on and endured the unfathomable is truly a testament to you dedication to duty. You are truly a God send for the people of your city, and I pray that you be blessed the same way that you have blessed countless others with your service over the past several days. You are the epitome of the term Lifesaver. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sir - Chicago, IL

Dear Officer,

Your decision to remain on the police force is a true expression of  your sense of civic service, loyalty, and patriotism.  If the framers of the U.S. constitution, our forefathers, were alive today, they would undoubtedly be proud of you and all of your brave brethren for upholding the defining principles of our land. You truly are establishing justice, working toward restoring domestic tranquility by actively promoting  the common defense in the name of protecting the general welfare of  everyone in the city of New Orleans. By the "police powers" vested in you  by the state of LA, in accord with the U.S. constitution, you are certainly  affording to your country a great service.  For this, I, your fellow  countrymen, and more importantly the people of the state of Louisiana, express  our deepest gratitude.  Our prayers are with you...

To the brave men and women of the New Orleans Police Department,

I would just like to let you know of my appreciation and support for the fine work you all are doing under the most difficult of circumstances. Although I am no longer a New Orleans resident, it is nonetheless a city I hold dear to my heart after residing there for four years of my life while attending Tulane University. I greatly applaud and admire your efforts to maintain law and order in the city, provide relief to hurricane victims, and rescue citizens from the rising flood waters. With the continued efforts of people like you, I am confident that New Orleans will be able to rebuild itself and rise again to become one of Americas truly great and unique cities. My thoughts and prayers are with each of you men and women in uniform. Thank you for doing a great job.

Sincerely,

To the First Responders of Louisiana:

Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do in Louisiana.   Having lived in Louisiana for several years, I know firsthand that it is a place worth saving, and I think it is wonderful that are you doing your best to do that.  I realize you are as much a victim as you are a hero right now.  I know you need food, water, shelter and rest.  I know a thank you note will provide you none of those things.  And yet, I hope in some small way this note is worth something.  If nothing else, I hope it will assure you that there are many of us around this nation (and beyond) who are thinking about you and in awe of what you have done and are doing in the face of such a catastrophe.
